Nature Boy

Nature Boy

BY HANNAH BRITTEN

There was a boy

a very strange enchanted boy

they say he wandered very far,

very far

over land and sea

a little shy and sad of eye

a sensitive soul was he.

There was a boy

a very still and quiet boy

he saw the world for what it was, and it was

like calloused skin and unrequited love

such that is hidden from sight and disposed of

sudden and secret from the moon and sun above.

There was a boy

a very deep devoted boy

they say he came so far,

so very far

over time and through trial

but still it seems, he was adrift in exile.

There was a boy

a very still and quiet boy

whose heart was iron pressed to his sleeve

assigned a station he could not leave.

Nails and knuckles

charcoal rubbed

this artist was a boy oh so loved.

There was a boy

a very odd beguiling boy

who hid behind lids, hats and hooks

a little shy and sad of eye

but very wise was he.

And then one day

one magic day he passed my way

and while we spoke of many things

dogs and flings

this he never said to me-

His own real truth

and severely bruised was this forgotten youth.

There was a boy

a very odd beguiling boy

they say he was given a gun and told to run

over hills and fields with no guarantee

of his love of land and sea.

He fought himself more than he ever fought you and me.

There was a boy

a very strange and solitary boy,

they say he was a lover

forced to fight.

The boy would let no one see

that he was trapped in that dark night.

There was a boy

a very strange enchanted boy

they say he wandered very far,

very far

over land and sea

a little shy and sad of eye

but very wise was he.

...

What happens to a lover forced to fight?

Romeo O Romeo?

...

Thus with a kiss we say goodbye

to the very strange enchanted boy

who was a little shy and sad of eye

and very far

very far too young to die.

And this boy

this very odd beguiling boy

would like me to say to you:

The greatest thing you'll ever learn,

is just to love

and be loved in return.
